Ultimate Guide to Choosing the Right Weight

One of the most common questions we get about our weighted blankets is: how heavy should my weighted blanket be? While there are some general guidelines, there are also other things to consider when choosing your blanket weight.

As a general guide your weighted blanket should be about 10% - 15% of your body weight, but there are other factors you might like to consider such as your current sleep habits, health and wellness goals.

What if I’m in between weights?

It’s likely that 10% - 15% of your body weight doesn’t fit nice and neatly into one of our blanket weight categories. So, if you're in-between those sizes, most experts recommend that jumping up to the next blanket weight is a good choice.

However, there are some things to consider. If you are buying the weighted blanket for someone who is frail, you may not want to add the extra weight, as too much pressure may be difficult for them to handle. The blanket should feel like a warm hug, not being crushed. On the other hand, if you're suffering from restless leg syndrome or insomnia, you might benefit from a heavier weight.

Can it ever be too heavy?

The key thing to remember is that you shouldn't feel uncomfortable under the weighted blanket and that the weight needs to be evenly distributed to be most effective. So if you go for a heavier blanket, but end up only using only half of it on your body, then it's not really going to be effective.

Weighted blankets work using Deep Touch Pressure, which is activated when you apply weight on certain pressure points on the body. This stimulates the production of serotonin, the happy hormone and melatonin, the sleep hormone. Both serotonin and melatonin can help to reduced anxiety and stress, which in turn leads to better sleep. So, you want to make sure you’re blanket has enough weight to trigger deep touch pressure and get those hormones flowing.

How does a weighted blanket improve my sleep and reduce anxiety?

Having just the right amount of pressure is how weighted blankets can help with conditions like anxiety, insomnia, Restless Leg Syndrome, and pain from fibromyalgia. So, for you to get the best benefit, we want to make sure you choose the blanket weight that is right for you!

As we mentioned, deep touch pressure works its magic when weight is evenly distributed across your body. This is a key factor in whether a weighted blanket is actually working as it’s supposed to, and played a key role in the design of our blanket.

Our blankets are soft and flexible, following the contors of your body, hugging every point. Most other weighted blankets have sewn-in pockets of pellets or beads that shift around in the night, causing the fillers to bunch up and throw off the even weight distribution.

Since deep touch pressure requires an even, all-encompassing weight, our weighted blankets have a better chance of hitting the right spots than the bead filled varieties.

What about sharing it with my partner?

It may sound selfish, but a weighted blanket is all about you! Deep touch pressure only works when weight is evenly distributed across your body. If you're sharing it with your partner it's not going to embrace you all over. That's why we only supply our blankets as a single size. Why not consider having one each?

What can I do if I pick the wrong weight?

We want to help relieve your anxiety, not increase it! We have a straight forward returns process. Give your blanket a fair trial and if you think you picked the wrong weight, just return it within 30 days.
